Democrat Quits Congress After Her ‘Witch Hunt’ Defense Fails — Except SHE Actually Did It

Democratic Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick of Florida resigned from Congress this week rather than face an expulsion vote over her corruption scandal. On her way out the door, she called the House Ethics Committee’s investigation a “witch hunt.”

Stop. Rewind. A Democrat — a DEMOCRAT — just said “witch hunt” with a straight face. After spending the better part of a decade mocking Donald Trump every single time he used those exact words. Welcome to the club, Sheila! Except when WE said it, there was no actual witch.

Here’s what makes this so delicious. The Ethics Committee didn’t just have a hunch about Cherfilus-McCormick. They didn’t rely on anonymous sources or some sketchy dossier paid for by the opposing party. No, a bipartisan subcommittee — that means Republicans AND Democrats — found “clear and convincing evidence” that she was guilty on all 25 violations brought against her. Twenty-five! That’s not a witch hunt. That’s an avalanche.

We’re talking serious campaign finance violations. We’re talking millions in misused FEMA funds — money that was supposed to help people recover from disasters. She allegedly took COVID relief money and used it to essentially buy herself a seat in Congress. Then she sat in that seat collecting a paycheck while investigators closed in.

Remember when Democrats spent four years shrieking about Trump’s “abuse of power”? They impeached him twice over phone calls and tweets. Meanwhile, one of their own was allegedly stuffing disaster relief money into her campaign war chest, and the Democratic caucus couldn’t muster a peep until the evidence was so overwhelming that even her own party had to admit she was cooked.

The beautiful part is the timing. She could have fought it. She could have stood up in front of the House and made her case. But she didn’t, because she knew exactly how that vote was going to go. So instead, she grabbed the resignation letter, scribbled “witch hunt” on her way out, and bolted for the exit like a kid caught stealing cookies who insists the cookie jar attacked him first.

“Witch hunt.” Honestly, the audacity is almost impressive.

For six years, every liberal pundit on cable news rolled their eyes and did their little smirky laugh whenever Trump said those words. “There he goes again!” they’d chirp from their MSNBC desks. “Classic authoritarian deflection!” The hashtags. The think pieces. The late-night monologues.

And now? One of their own gets caught red-handed — bipartisan investigation, 25 confirmed violations, clear and convincing evidence — and she reaches into Trump’s playbook like it’s a life raft.

(Funny how that works, isn’t it? “Witch hunt” is dangerous authoritarian rhetoric when a Republican says it, but it’s a perfectly reasonable defense when a Democrat facing 25 ethics violations needs a quick exit strategy.)

This is the Democratic Party in a nutshell. Rules for thee, catchphrases for me. They’ll lecture you about “norms” and “accountability” until one of their own is the one sitting in the hot seat. Then suddenly every tool in the toolbox is fair game — even the ones they spent years telling you were threats to democracy.

The House is expected to move forward with its proceedings regardless, because the ethics findings don’t just disappear because she cleaned out her desk. Those 25 violations are on the record. The evidence is public. And the American taxpayers who funded her little adventure deserve to see the full accounting.

But Sheila won’t be there for it. She grabbed her “witch hunt” card, played it on her way to the parking lot, and drove off into the sunset.

Hey, at least she finally found something she and Trump agree on. Too bad for her, Trump was actually innocent.
