The bitter feud between Liz Cheney and former President Donald Trump is heating up again. The Wyoming GOP representative interviewed with Fox News Sunday and said that even the editorial boards of newspapers owned by right-leaning billionaire Rupert Murdoch agree with her that Trump is “unfit” to hold office again.
Cheney is the vice chair of the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, riot on the U.S. Capitol. After the attack against the federal legislative branch of the government last year, Cheney has arisen to become one of the loudest antagonists against the former president. Now she is saying to the media, “It’s not just me that’s saying that Donald Trump is unfit for office. Its other entities are owned by Rupert Murdoch. It’s the New York Post in their editorial on Friday. It’s The Wall Street Journal—said the same thing after our hearing on Thursday night. So I’m going to continue to be guided by making sure I do my duty and making sure the American people understand the truth.”
She was referring to what the Post wrote on Friday in an opinion article by their editorial board that was titled: “Trump’s silence on Jan. 6 is damning.”
“His only focus was to find any means—damn the consequences—to block the peaceful transfer of power. There is no other explanation, just as there is no defense, for his refusal to stop the violence. It’s up to the Justice Department to decide if this is a crime. But as a matter of principle, as a matter of character, Trump has proven himself unworthy to be this country’s chief executive again,” the Post board wrote.
And The Wall Street Journal’s editorial board published this weekend an article titled: “The president who stood still on Jan. 6.”
They wrote: “Mr. Trump took an oath to defend the Constitution, and he had a duty as Commander in Chief to protect the Capitol from a mob attacking it in his name. He refused. He didn’t call the military to send help. He didn’t call [then-Vice President Mike Pence] to check on the safety of his loyal VP. Instead, he fed the mob’s anger and let the riot play out,” the editorial board wrote.
The article condemned Trump’s actions, contending that “the facts it [the House select committee] is laying out in hearings are sobering.”
Cheney has not only drawn harsh criticism from Trump for her actions, but several GOP leaders have also criticized her for such strong reactions to the former president.
Rupert Murdoch owns hundreds of publishing outlets through his company News Corp., including both The Post and The Journal. He also owns Fox News and serves as the chairman of the Fox Corporation.
Cheney has been on the warpath for some time now with Trump. She also did an interview with CNN in which she came after Trump for his effort to overturn the 2020 election with Joe Biden.
She said that Trump violated the oath of his office and the constitution. And she indicated that his gross misconduct is the worst of any president in the history of our nation.
Trump has been working hard against Cheney in the race for her seat in Wyoming. The former president has endorsed her challenger, Harriet Hageman in the GOP primary. According to some recent polls, Hageman is in the lead by double digits among Republican voters in the conservative state. The primary will be held on August 16.
This war started when Cheney decided to support the second impeachment of Trump for inciting the January 6 riot on the U.S. Capitol. There were a total of 10 GOP House members and 6 GOP Senators who voted with Cheney.
But Cheney has been relentless in her antagonism against Trump.
The former president maintains that he did nothing wrong on January 6 and that Biden won the election through voter fraud. And he refers to Cheney’s House select committee investigation as a “witch hunt.”
