If you pay any attention to political Twitter outrage, you’ve likely heard the rumors that New York’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is aiming to take on Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in 2022. The idea has been around for a while, at least in part.
When AOC herself booted out Representative Joe Crowley in 2018 and became one of the least experienced members of Congress, ideas of that continued upset began. Basically, it’s the idea that the old, worn out, white dinosaurs should move aside for fresher and more varied faces. After all, who doesn’t love the underdog?
And on Tuesday, when New York Representative Eliot Engel was also thought to be through, this idea was only furthered.
As the Washington Times reported, it “has far-left activists dreaming big about the future. So big, in fact, that liberals are kicking around the idea that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez could launch a 2022 primary challenge against a titan of the Democratic Party establishment: Senate Minority Leader Charles E Schumer.”
Bernie Sanders campaign senior advisor David Sirota tweeted out this week, “Just going to say something out loud that should be obvious: The fastest way to speed up the process of changing the corrupt, do-nothing, status-quo-protecting culture of the national Democratic Party is for @AOC to defeat @ChuckSchumer in a Democratic primary in 2022.”
And at first glance, it appears that President Trump himself is a fan of this idea.
He tweeted in response, “Actually, that would be a big improvement – and she would win!”
Although, I have to say this has to be more for laughs than anything else. I mean, can you imagine AOC becoming Nancy Pelosi’s right hand? Talk about catfights…
I have to admit he does have a point. If the progressive left is dead set on getting rid of the crust that has held their party together for the last 50 or so years, then it’s time for new leadership. However, I just hope they realize that putting AOC or any of her “squad” cronies into positions with that much power will not only change their party entirely but also destroy it.
After all, AOC has pretty much identified herself as a socialist for a while now. And outside of her small New York City squad, most of the state and the party tend to lean a little farther to the right.
And that brings us to the much-debated topic of if AOC can even make it to 2022, let alone beat an incumbent as experienced as Schumer.
As of right now, AOC has quite a formidable opponent this year. And according to the National Review, that contender has more in common with the community than AOC.
“Now, in Tuesday’s primary, AOC faces a moderate challenger who says it’s AOC who has become a distant figure to her poor Bronx and Queens constituents, one more interested in superstardom and her 7.3 million Twitter followers than in bringing jobs to the district.”
Her contender, a former business-news anchor on CNBC, Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, in particular, criticizes AOC on her opposition to Amazon building a second headquarters in the district, which would have brought in about 25,000 new jobs.
As the National Review reports, ’You voted against your community,’ Caruso Cabrera told AOC last week, during one of their few debates, noting that AOC is such a rigid ideologue that she was the only Democrat to vote against the Payroll Protection Plan, which includes funds for hospitals and COVID-19 testing. Caruso-Cabrera says the ‘Medicare for All is not the answer,’ and she calls AOC’s Green New Deal ‘divisive policy.’
AOC, like her would-be presidential pick Bernie Sanders, has become so taken with the idea of socialism and the far left that she is basically ostracizing herself from her party and her constituents.
She doesn’t like big corporations, so she doesn’t want them around, regardless of the thousands of jobs they can bring to her community. But she does like big government. So if there is an opportunity to federalize health insurance, she’s going to go for it, no matter how much more expensive it will be for those around her.
And while we are at it, why don’t we just go ahead and shut down the millions of fossil fuel jobs this country has, because you know the world is going to end in 12 or so years if we don’t.
I have to say Caruso-Cabrera is right. AOC doesn’t have a clue or even care what her people need. Instead, like most of the Democratic elite, she has become irrational and power-hungry only.
