Herbert Parrish is 82 years old. He served in Vietnam. He lives in Aiken, South Carolina with his 79-year-old wife Lois. And when a 61-year-old lowlife named Harold Runnels Jr. kicked in his back door with a knife, Herbert grabbed the shotgun off his wall and beat the man to death with it. Ten shots to the face. With the barrel. Problem solved.
Somebody get this man a statue.
Here’s how it went down. Runnels showed up at the Parrishes’ back door around two in the afternoon — broad daylight, because criminals are also stupid — and knocked. He told Lois he was looking for his lost white chihuahua. Lois, being a nice Southern lady, told him she hadn’t seen it. When she went to close the door, Runnels forced his way inside, pulled out a large knife, and started attacking her. He hit both Herbert and Lois with the handle of the knife and slashed Lois across the forehead.
Now pause for a second and picture this. You’re 82 years old. Your wife is bleeding. A grown man with a knife is standing in your living room. Most people would freeze. Herbert Parrish is not most people.
“I felt, we’re gone,” Herbert told reporters afterward. “He’s going to kill us and take what he can take.”
But then that Vietnam training kicked in.
“I said, I’ve got to do something quick and get the edge on him.”
So Herbert grabbed the shotgun hanging on his wall right by the door — because this is South Carolina and we keep our firearms where we can reach them, thank you very much — and he didn’t even bother pulling the trigger. He just started swinging. He cracked Runnels across the face with the barrel of that shotgun at least ten times, “just as hard as I could hit him,” until the intruder dropped unconscious on the floor.
Runnels was hauled off to the hospital. He died that night. And nothing of value was lost.
Both Herbert and Lois were injured in the attack but made full recoveries. Because Parrishes are built different.
Here’s the part that should make every gun-grabbing Democrat choke on their organic kombucha: the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office had already received reports about Runnels from a neighbor months earlier. The neighbor had flagged him for suspicious activity in the area. And yet there he was, kicking in the door of an elderly couple’s home with a hunting knife.
The system didn’t protect Herbert and Lois Parrish. A bureaucrat didn’t save them. A social worker didn’t show up with a conflict resolution pamphlet. A gun on the wall saved them. An 82-year-old man who learned how to fight in the jungles of Southeast Asia saved them.
Neighbor Jessica Clark summed it up perfectly: “That guy picked the wrong house.”
Yeah, he sure did.
We keep hearing from the Left that nobody “needs” a gun. That firearms in the home are a danger. That we should trust the police to protect us. Really? Tell that to Lois Parrish, who was getting slashed in the face by a knife-wielding maniac at two o’clock on a Monday afternoon. How long do you think it would’ve taken for 911 to send someone out to rural Aiken County? Five minutes? Ten? Lois didn’t have ten minutes.
She had Herbert. And Herbert had a shotgun.
This is the America that Democrats want to disarm. Elderly couples in small towns who keep a weapon by the door because they know — they KNOW — that when trouble comes knocking, you’re on your own. The cavalry isn’t coming. The government isn’t coming. You are the first responder.
And let’s talk about the fake chihuahua story for a second, because that’s the detail that really makes your blood boil. This wasn’t a random break-in. Runnels had a plan. He concocted a story about a lost dog to get Lois to open the door, because he knew that a nice old lady in South Carolina would try to help a neighbor find his pet. He weaponized her kindness. He exploited the basic decency of a 79-year-old woman to get inside her home so he could rob them — or worse.
That’s evil. Plain and simple.
But evil picked the wrong house that day. Evil ran into a man who spent his youth fighting communists in the jungle and came home with a very particular set of skills that don’t expire at 65. Or 75. Or 82.
The Left wants you to believe that self-defense is barbaric. That we should wait for the authorities. That guns kill people.
Nah. Guns save people. Herbert Parrish’s shotgun saved two lives that Monday afternoon.
God bless Herbert Parrish. God bless Lois. And God bless the Second Amendment — because without it, we’d be reading a very different headline right now.
